NonProfit Times Cover - Jan MasoakaSan Francisco (December 10, 2002) – Throughout this economic downturn, one nonprofit has continued to excel—by consulting and training for managers and leaders of other nonprofits. . Nonprofit Times this week named Jan Masaoka Nonprofit Executive of the Year to honor CompassPoint’s continuing excellence, as well as honor her own work in driving new ideas and innovation in the field. Masaoka is the first executive honored from the West Coast’s nonprofit sector, which generally takes a back seat to the East Coast’s nonprofit sector on the national scene.

CompassPoint is a leading provider of consulting, training and research for nonprofit organizations of all types, but truly sees itself as a social change organization. “This honor should really be understood not as recognition of me, but of CompassPoint, and of the idea that strengthening community-based nonprofits is an effective strategy for social change”, remarked Masaoka about receiving this honor. “I'm proud to work for an organization whose board, staff, funders and partners share a commitment to social justice and to technical excellence.” This vision of social change is reflected in how CompassPoint describes and approaches its work (see http://www.compasspoint.org/annual_report).

The Nonprofit Times recognized CompassPoint’s commitment to their vision and consistent excellent work in the field not just in good times, but also when things are difficult for many in the nonprofit sector. “It's easy to do well during good economic times. What Jan and her organization have done is expand in tough times and then teach others how to do it,” Paul Clolery, Editor-in-Chief of the Nonprofit Times stated when asked about her selection. “Theirs is a remarkable story of management support for the sector.” The Nonprofit Times is the leading national business publication for Nonprofit Management (see full story at http://www.nptimes.com/Dec02/npt1.html).

CompassPoint’s development of new and innovative programs like their Executive Transitions and Leadership Services has earned equally high praise for Masaoka and the organization from other groups. “Under Jan’s extraordinary leadership and vision, CompassPoint has been highly entrepreneurial in keeping ahead of emerging trends and policy concerns and taking on key issues in the nonprofit sector,” remarked Sylvia Yee, Vice President of Programs of the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund. “Their innovative response to the issue of supporting the development of nonprofit executives is a prime example of Jan and her team’s ability to implement practical and effective solutions as well as to share thoughtful lessons with the field.”
